UNISONActive Exclusive: UNISON Britain's biggest union

The Development and Organisation Committee of UNISON's NEC met in London today. It received a 2010 year end membership report following DOCAS line counts of working members in all regions. Last year UNISON had the best recruitment performance for 10 years and grew by 19,000 members (1.45%).

UNISON membership at the end of 30 September 2010 stood at 1,329,000 full members.

In a recent Joint General Secretary briefing following its November 2010 NEC, it was reported to Unite branches that the 'total paying membership of Unite' is 1,222,767.

It is now beyond doubt that UNISON is the largest union in the UK - the challenge is to make those numbers tell in the campaign against austerity, pay cuts and in defence of our pensions. And to organise harder than ever before to ensure our numbers are maintained in face of the ConDem public sector jobs onslaught.
