Public sector pay strikes in Germany

Ver.di, the German public service union, has mounted a series of one day ‘token strikes’ in support of a 3% pay rise for members employed by regional governments. Pay talks had stalled on 25 February when the employers refused to present an offer.

The rolling strikes commenced in Saarland on Monday and in the past five days action has spread to other German states:

Ver.di represents 600,000 public sector workers and at a strike rally in Dusseldorf its leader Frank Bsirske said "our employers have built a wall around themselves and that is something we can't and won't accept"
