Former TUC General Secretary John Monks – soon to reside in the House of Lords – attended a mass rally of trade unionists in Madrid last Thursday and gave ‘100% support’ to the general strike planned for 29 September.
The outgoing ETUC General Secretary told the assembled 16 000 delegates, from the CCOO and UGT union confederations, that ‘the labour reform adopted in Spain is, together with that of Greece, the worst in Europe..’.
Monks may have a point as far as individual employment rights are concerned but worse than Blair’s ‘most restrictive union laws in the western world’? Given that a general strike is effectively impossible under UK anti unión laws - where a ‘trade dispute’ is a pre requisite of lawful industrial action - surely Monks is mistaken?
