Spanish public sector workers prepare to mount strike action against austerity measures‏

Spanish trade unions have called for a national public sector strike and demonstrations against the emergency austerity plan adopted by the social democratic led Government at the behest of the international financial markets.

Ignacio Fernández Toxo of Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) the largest union centre said there was “total rejection of the new austerity plan.”

The FT reports that the EU has demanded additional budget savings of €15bn over two years, to cut the Spanish deficit from 11.2 per cent of gross domestic product in 2009 to 9.3 per cent this year and 6 per cent in 2011, as part of the €750bn euro zone rescue package.
