The Government’s programme Transforming Community Services is about introducing wholesale competition, contestability and privatisation of NHS services. UNISON has been campaigning against the proposals, and engaging with activists to challenge privatisation threats locally.
UNISON has led the reformation of NHS Together an umbrella group bringing all NHS trade unions and professional organisation together. Andy Burnham, Secretary of State for Health in a recent meeting with NHS Together, and in a speech to the Kings Fund has gone on record as saying that his preferred provider for NHS services is the public sector NHS.
This is a significant achievement for NHS trade unions, NHS workers and UNISON members and activists. NHS Together is working on agreeing a policy statement which can beused to promote our message of quality public services, provided by the public sector, as not only being the best for delivering healthcare, but also as the most efficient and cost effective, as opposed to the private sector.
