UNISON members strike to defend pay in South Gloucestershire

Pickets at South Gloucestershire today
UNISON members working at South Gloucestershire Council are embarking on an industrial action campaign following an overwhelming vote for industrial action in response to employer attacks on their pay allowances. 24 hour strike action today will involve library assistants, care assistants, traffic wardens and social workers.

On 1 October 2013, the council intends to impose new contracts on staff who have to work weekends, cutting pay rates for Saturday working by 33%. The council says that Saturday should now be regarded as a 'normal working day'. In addition, it plans to change allowances for working at night. Many workers face losing up to 10% of their pay and some will lose substantially more, depending on work patterns.
