Middlesbrough has one of the highest levels of deprivation, and child poverty in the Region, and public sector job cuts will impact on the delivery of vital public services which are needed by some of the most vulnerable, but also on the ability of the regional economy to grow.

The Mayor of Middlesbrough, Ray Mallon spoke passionately about the commitment of public sector workers, and gave his support to the work of the Northern Public Service Alliance in challenging the austerity measures being imposed by the Government. There are alternatives such as a Robin Hood Tax, ending tax avoidance, scrapping Trident to name a few.

The rally ended with a rousing call for continued activity by trade unions, campaigners, and local politicans to build the broadest oppostion to stop attacks on ordinary people who did not cause the financial crisis, and should not be made to pay the price for it.
