Ed Miliband yesterday backed the campaign by Richmond school meals workers to win sick pay and improved hourly rates. Speaking at the Richmond Labour Party meeting he pledged his support for their campaign against the global company Sodexo who have denied them sick pay and many other entitlements under the 'Workforce Code' - which the coalition government is looking to end. http://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/news/content/view/full/94595
Joining Ed on the platform were UNISON Deputy General Secretary Keith Sonnet and one of the Richmond workers. She described how Sodexo - one of the largest catering companies in the world, employing 380,000 people world wide - failed on basic health and safety requirements and the provision of essential catering equipment all in the name of profit. UNISON is meeting Sodexo on 22 September in an effort to negotiate a resolution of these workers’ demand for fairness.
Sodexo is bidding for the prestigious catering contract for the London Olympics, after recently purchasing hundreds of thousands of corporate tickets for the events. They currently have catering contracts at a number of leading football clubs including Chelsea.
