Cut Trident not Public Services: take action for a fair budget‏

In less than a week the Chancellor Alistair Darling will announce the budget for 2010 - we need to ensure that ordinary people and public sector workers do not foot the bill for the financial crisis. That's why we urgently need you to send a letter to the Chancellor calling on him to deliver a budget that is truly fair for all: please send a message now by clicking http://action.compassonline.org.uk/budget

Compass members and supporters have long been at the forefront of campaigning for a fairer society. This time last year we successfully campaigned for a new 50% top rate of tax. In last year's Pre-Budget Report we also campaigned successfully for a windfall tax on bank bonuses. Your action has been invaluable in all of these campaigns but we cannot be complacent, we need to step up the pressure once more.

It cannot be fair that those of us who played no part in creating the financial crash end up paying for it. Tax-payers have underwritten the banks to the tune of £850bn, we shouldn't have to pay again through public spending cuts.

Instead, we should be abandoning socially useless projects such as Trident and the ID Cards database. The government could also raise revenue fairly by introducing the top rate of income tax for earnings over £100,000. Our publication In Place of Cuts has shown that these policies could save nearly £20bn per year.

Please take action, the public sector should not be made to pay for the mistakes of reckless bankers.

P.S. We are really pleased with the overwhelmingly positive response so far to our Transforming Labour survey since we launched it last week. So far over 1000 people have taken part. The deadline for responses is midday on Monday 5 April. If you haven't already please take part in the survey now - it will only take 10 minutes of your time.
