In a statement, Mr Zelaya urged Western Hemisphere countries to step upeconomic sanctions "against the de facto regime". The BBC reports the words of the legitimate President of Honduras,Manuel Zelaya (October 17) "Once again we call on the international community to remain steadfastand not to recognize the de facto regime.. The United States shouldapply direct sanctions against the perpetrators of the coup.We are notasking for sanctions against a nation, but to isolate the perpetratorsof the coup."
