At a packed conference fringe tonight in Liverpool a glittering array of speakers talked of the importance of fighting for social justice, solidarity and internationalism. The effect of dragging people out of poverty can never be diminished as long as it is understood and supported by the will of the people, as has been so clearly demonstrated by Cuba and Venezuela.
Hugely impressive statistics have been recorded - wonderful and unprecedented achievements in spite of vicious attacks and blockades from those who do not accept that another world is possible.
Chaired by Diana Holland Unite, delegates heard from Esther Armenteros Cuban Ambassador, Cathy Jamieson MP, Colin Burgon VSC, Alvaro Sanchez from the Venezuela Embassy and Steve Cavalier from Thompsons solicitors, all of whom talked in detail about the struggles overcome and those in the future facing both countries.
Touching on the Miami 5, the economic warfare waged against Cuba, media lies and distortions about both countries, the need for closer ties between the UK and Cuba, Venezuela's elections next year and the changes currently taking place in Cuba the overwhelming message was one of optimism and a steadfast defence of the struggle for socialism and social justice throughout the world.
An inspirational meeting that has lessons that need to be understood by everyone at the Labour Party conference.
