On the afternoon of Wednesday 18 May the UK Government will announce their plan to spend several billion pounds over the next five years on new nuclear-armed submarines. The statement will be made to MPs in the House of Commons.
They are expected to say that they will build the new submarines with the more expensive PWR3 nuclear reactor, rather than the less safe PWR2 reactor. This will increase the costs of the Trident replacement programme.
The UK Government's plan is to base the new submarines at Faslane until 2060. This announcement will fly in the face of the will of the people of Scotland, who have just elected a parliament with a clear majority of MSPs who are strongly opposed to nuclear weapons.
If you are concerned about this, please send a short message to your MP and new MSPs. They can be contacted on http://www.writetothem.com/
