STUC calls on the UK Government to work towards a cessation of the current military action in Libya

An emergency motion was passed yesterday by STUC Annual Congress urging the UK Government to work towards a cessation of the current military action in Libya and to seek a diplomatic solution that will allow for a peaceful transition to democracy in the country.

Speaking after the debate Grahame Smith, General Secretary, of the Scottish Trades Union Congress said:

“The STUC is concerned that the military action taken by British, French and US forces goes beyond the scope of the UN resolution and has resulted in civilian casualties. There is a real risk of ‘mission creep’, increasing humanitarian costs and large numbers of refugees fleeing the area.

“It is imperative that Britain does not become involved in a long and drawn out ground offensive, which would be to the detriment of the Libyan people.

“We are also concerned that this military approach does not contribute to developing the sort of society that Libya needs to become truly democratic. Developing organisations, such as independent trade unions, is required to build democracy and ensure lasting change for Libya.

“We are therefore calling on the UK Government to work towards a cessation of the current military action in Libya and to seek a diplomatic solution that will allow for a peaceful transition to democracy.
