Israel lobby clutching at straws in defence of the indefensible

Long term critics of UNISON solidarity with the Palestinian people’s struggle for justice and statehood have seized on a union delegation report to divide and undermine opponents of the Israeli regime’s brutal occupation: http://hurryupharry.org/2011/04/15/palestinians-tell-british-union-don%e2%80%99t-sever-ties-with-the-histadrut/

As ever, the author of this propaganda piece has placed it prominently in the headlines section of his Labourstart web site for maximum effect:  http://www.labourstart.org.uk/

That the UNISON delegation has faithfully reported the views of its Palestinian interlocutors on the question of external union links with Israeli union federation Histadrut is to be applauded. Our union’s members would expect no less of them. Unlike our pro-Israel critics, we do not distort the views of others in order to advance the cause which we support. The actual significance of this point in the context of the union’s trenchant views on the plight of the Palestinians and the brutality of Israeli repression can be read in full here:

However, this delegation report, or indeed this year’s UNISON National Delegate Conference, will not be the final word on British union links with the Histadrut.

Recently its Chairman was quoted as stating in New York (of right wing leader Netanyahu) that "I will never attack our prime minister when I'm in another country. That's my rule. I can only support him," and so far the Israeli union federation has been conspicuously silent on emerging Israeli laws which will make support for a boycott of Israel a criminal offence.

It is only a matter of time before new questions are raised about the Histadrut’s stance on democratic and human rights in an era when the Palestinian people are denied basic freedoms:
