Tories attempt to attack London Fire Service by sacking all crews.

Expect Tories to show their real colours on Thursday when the Tory controlled London Fire Authority is intending to sack all London fire fighters. This will be accompanied by re-engagement on new terms and conditions.

In an ongoing dispute about working hours the FBU already abandonned industrial action and 84% of members voted to accept the recommendation of an independent panel to change their working hours. The firefighters accepted a move to a 10.5 hour day shift and 13.5 night shift. But they are clear that they reject 12 hour day shift working.

Having been prepared to compromise through negotiations, it would seem that their political masters are not. The FBU have been clear throughout however that they will NOT compromise on public safety and that any further changes are a major threat.

Should the Tories plough ahead a further strike seems inevitable. But Johnson the 'lovable" buffoon who moonlights as London mayor already has a contract with a firm of strike breakers to provide completely inadequately trained individuals to crew fire engines, and seem likely to be more of a danger to themselves that to be able to assist in an emergency. This contract costs London tax payers £12 million .

This dispute shows clearly the value that Tories place on quality public services and well trained staff. The FBU in London need full support from trade unionists everywhere.

It may be the FBU in London today but could be any of us soon.
