Greek unions escalate resistance to cuts in jobs and pay‏

Next week Greek trade unions are planning more strikes and rallies in protest at austerity measures. A 24-hour general strike will be held on Thursday 11 March.

Strikes were organised by GSEE and ADEDY and several smaller unions and federations on Friday when the centre of Athens and other cities were shut down by large rallies and marches.

The protests coincided with the decision of the Greek parliament on Friday to approve a €4.8bn austerity package aimed at slashing the budget deficit and ‘rebuilding credibility with international financial markets’.
