Rallies were held in major cities against the budget proposals of the Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) government of Prime Minister José Luis Zapatero.

Zapatero announced 50bn euro ($67.5bn; £43.8bn) spending cuts and a civil service jobs freeze in January. The main demonstration was in Madrid, where over 60 000 workers protested.

"Mr prime minister, don't play around with pensions, with the future of millions and millions of people in our country," said Ignacio Fernandez Toxo General Secretary of Comisiones Obreras (CCOO), in a speech at the Madrid rally.
