UNISON backed candidate wins Welsh labour leadership election‏

Yesterday Carwyn Jones, the AM for Bridgend, was comfortably elected leader of the Labour Party in Wales and will succeed Rhodri Morgan as First Minister.

Jones won outright in the first ballot:
Carwyn Jones - 51.98 per cent
Edwina Hart - 29.19 per cent
Huw Lewis - 18.84 per cent

UNISON was one of only four trade unions to nominate Jones (along with the Musicians Union, NUM and UCATT) and Labour Link levy payers who voted in the election backed him by four to one. In the leadership ballot across all unions and affiliated organisations Jones won more votes than the other two candidates combined.
