As the refuse collectors strike enters its eleventh week of continuous strike action Leeds Council has been criticised for paying out in excess of £1m to private contractors during the strike.
Opposition Labour group leader Keith Wakefield condemned Liberal/Tory led council for its intransigence and said: "I have always maintained this was a totally unnecessary strike and it has gone on for an extremely unnecessary length of time. The whole thing has been a rather sad, unnecessary waste of council taxpayers' money. It has cost an absolute fortune."
