Leeds refuse collectors dispute – GMB & UNISON unity in action

The Leeds refuse collectors dispute is about to enter its sixth week of continuous action. Today’s Morning Star reports on a strike rally held yesterday and addressed by GMB leader Paul Kenny:.

In a highly charged and passionate address, Mr Kenny said the dispute was not about equalising pay with women, as the council had claimed.

"You don't equalise pay down, you equalise up," said Mr Kenny to cheers from the audience.

"It is about fighting for women's pay to be upgraded to that of men's."

Bringing solidarity greetings from UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis, Mr Kenny said: "You could not fit a cigarette paper between the unions.

"Nothing can stop our unions prosecuting this dispute until we win."
