Dave Prentis gives a rousing call to arms to defend front line public services

TUC: Dave Prentis, UNISON General Secretary moved the keynote composite motion 21 on public services and the economy. Drawing on the work being done at all levels of the union to resist cuts in jobs and services Dave attacked attempts to shift the burden of the economic crisis onto the backs of public service workers.

“Congress, £141 billion pounds of tax payers’ money has gone into bailing out the banks. Barclays in 2009 alone still paying out £200 million in city bonuses. Congress, if we need to balance the books, we need to get the money back. Don’t close the local nursery, the Sure Start centre. Don’t sack health care assistants, Don’t stop meals on wheels. Stop the tax avoidance by the rich. Make the banks honour their obligation to our society. Stop their obscene bonuses. Stop the excess and make them honour their debts. Make them pay and not our public services.”
